Research & Partnerships

Innovation thrives on curiosity. We seek out challenges and find opportunities for research partnerships to expand knowledge and bring forward useable solutions. Through our research partnerships, Calian invests in improving health outcomes for veterans and military families and researching new cyber capabilities. We partner with universities, research institutes, and incubators to drive innovation.

Culturally Informed Health Guides

When delivering health care to military families and veterans, it is important to understand the unique requirements of these populations, to deliver culturally informed care. In collaboration with the Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research (CIMVHR) and Military Family Services, Calian has executed research to develop health guides for both patients and healthcare providers to better support effective conversations when meeting for the first time. These guides are distributed to healthcare providers in the Calian network who are treating veterans and military family members.

Pharmacogenetic Testing Research

Calian is initiating research with our partners to investigate the use of simple genetic testing to support personalized care to veterans. Through pharmacogenetic testing, healthcare providers can better understand the optimal medications based on the individual’s DNA.

This is particularly important in the treatment and management of PTSD symptoms and pain management or in cases of several comorbidities. Getting to the right drug treatment sooner minimizes trial and error, avoids negative side effects and accelerates the path to recovery.

Dalhousie-Calian Cyber Research

In partnership with Dalhousie, Calian is developing a multi-year partnership focused on cybersecurity research and the development of a new curriculum to train the next generation of qualified cyber graduates.

Initial research will focus on data exhaust. Internet of Things (IoT) devices have the potential to learn about their users and their surrounding environments by combining information from sensors in cameras and microphones and from internet use. By-products from a user’s online actions, known as data exhaust, can be a security threat. This research will ultimately lead to applications that help our government and commercial customers enhance their security postures.

L-Spark

This partnership with Canada’s largest software-as-a-service (SaaS) accelerator will help small- and medium-sized business (SMBs) grow and bring new products to market by integrating with the Calian digital health platform-as-a-service (PaaS) solution.

This will provide value-added functionality across the care continuum. SMBs that join the program will gain access to Calian sales and distribution channels and our extensive customer base. The ideal candidates are Canadian companies focused on care team collaboration, educational content, patient engagement, remote monitoring and medication monitoring.
