Did you know?

There are 40,000 families of full-time regular force Canadian Armed Forces personnel who do not receive care through the military, but access healthcare through provincial programs.

Military families face unique circumstances:

  • Frequent relocations
  • Regular family absences due to training and/or deployment
  • Increased risk for operational injury, illness or death of the military member.

Military Family Doctor Network

Calian Health, in collaboration with Military Family Services (MFS), has introduced the Military Family Doctor Network (MFDN) program as part of its corporate citizenship efforts. The program aims to help families of Canadian Armed Forces members get quality health care faster by making it easier to find a doctor and reducing the number of spouses and children without one.

Cost-free healthcare access for Canadian Armed Forces families
Available in multiple locations across Canada
Collaboration with family physicians in Primacy clinics and beyond
Expedites the process of obtaining a physician for military families
Reduces the number of military spouses and children without a family physician
Provides access to physical and mental health resources

MFDN locations

The program is provided at no cost to families or the Canadian Armed Forces and is available in Calgary, Comox, Edmonton, Halifax, Kingston, London and SW Ontario, Mainland BC, St. John’s, Toronto, Ottawa, Trenton and Winnipeg.

Some family physicians at Primacy clinics in these communities are participating in the MFDN program and Calian is recruiting family physicians outside Primacy clinics to make room in their practices for military family members.

Note: There are currently wait lists in some communities. Also, please note that the MFDN is not an urgent referral service. For emergencies, please seek care in your community or call 911.

How to register

You can access the program in one of the following ways:

  • Download and fill out the online form. Save the form under a unique file name prior to filling it out. Click on the submit completed form button at the bottom of the document or attach the form to an email and email it to [email protected].
  • Print out the online form and fax it to 1-888-511-0219
  • Call Calian’s team at 1-877-633-7722 and press 5

The MFDN does not manage or oversee participating clinics and their practices. Clinics and physicians are subject to oversight by the regulatory bodies in their provinces.

Walk-in clinics

Primacy has over 150 clinics in all 10 Canadian provinces that doctors use as their primary practice locations. Primacy clinics provide medical services to over six million Canadians annually and are located in Loblaw grocery stores across Canada (including Real Canadian Superstore®, Zehrs®, Loblaws® and No Frills®).

Children’s Outpatient Centre (COPC), Kingston serves patients in the Kingston area from birth to 18 years of age, providing a unique walk-in emergency clinic for paediatric patients.

Virtual care services

Maple and Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services are collaborating to provide online doctor visits to dependents of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members living in Canada. It is a safe and effective way to access routine healthcare from the comfort of your home, 24/7.

MFDN for physicians

In Canada, the families of actively serving CAF members don’t receive healthcare though the Department of National Defence. They must access medical services through the provincial and territorial health care systems.

Canadian military families need your help

We understand that you may have a full and busy practice; however, we ask that you consider accepting even a few military families. You’ll make a difference in the lives of the families who support those who proudly serve our country.

How to register

Registering with the MFDN is easy and does not require you to alter your usual booking procedure. Once you receive an application from Primacy, we arrange for the patient to call the clinic and schedule their own appointment. Register by calling Calian’s team at 1-877-633-7722 and press 5 or email [email protected].
