Jim joined Calian back in 1999 as an assembler. He didn’t know much about Calian (then SED Systems) when he joined.
“I filled out a wanted ad, was called for an interview and that was it.”

Jim started work on the Iris Cable project, a large bilateral cable project, and things moved fast from there. “A couple weeks later, they made me a team leader and said ‘roll with it’.” He certainly did!

After that, Jim transitioned across several roles at Calian through the years, managing crucial responsibilities including work on the surface mount technology line, running the wave solder machine, and tool crib coordinator.

After many years in hands-on roles across Calian, Jim decided to tackle a new challenge. With support and encouragement from his co-workers, he applied for the role of facility supervisor, his current role. “I had people come to me saying I was a good fit—and they were kind enough to take a risk and give me the job.” Jim was excited for the opportunity, even with the learning curve, “I took the role and I grew into it—and I enjoyed it!” Jim credits the fantastic support he received from his manager in helping him transition into the role.

In describing his role as facility supervisor, Jim says simply, “I make sure everything runs smoothly”. His days are spent monitoring multiple Calian facilities, which includes scheduling and working with contractors, managing staff, managing shutdowns and much more. It’s a hectic role, but one that Jim has embraced and thrived in.

Jim’s co-workers have very much enjoyed working alongside him over the years. “It was great working with Jim the last few years. He treated this building like it was his own, always keeping it in tip-top shape,” said Bob Pratt, Senior VP, Operations at Calian AT. Jim shares these positive sentiments—when asked his favourite part about working at Calian, he said  “the people.”

Jim looks forward to things settling down in his retirement, but not too much. “I’m buying a motorcycle, so am looking forward to a few road trips. I am also restoring a couple of older motorcycles. And there’s lots of work to be done around the house, which hasn’t had my full attention over the last 20 years.” He’s also excited to spend time with his young grandson. He may even take on some part-time work to stay busy.

The Calian team wishes Jim all the best in his retirement and his future adventures!
