McMaster University – St. Joseph’s Hospital
St. Joseph’s Hospital is recognized as a leading academic and research center, known for its excellence in respiratory care, kidney and urinary care, mental health and addictions, surgical services, cancer surgery, and women’s and infants’ care. St. Joseph’s is affiliated with McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. McMaster is known and recognized as one of the most research-intensive universities in Canada.
Calian developed virtual reality experiences to train medical staff in areas of violence, managing critical incidents, and building knowledge and familiarity on procedural tasks in the course of treatment. We developed these scenarios working directly with leaders at St. Joseph’s Hospital and McMaster University to prepare doctors, nurses and other medical professionals for routine, complex and possibly dangerous situations. Using virtual reality, we can immerse the trainee in an environment that simulates real-life, preparing them for high-impact experiences. The scenarios are based on real-life clinical events to prepare clinicians for thing that have happened, and exercises their decision-making skills along the way. Their decisions will impact the overall experience and outcome.
