Karen Davidson Retires After 35 Years at Calian

After a 35-year career at SED/Calian, Karen Davidson is retiring effective October 14, 2022, as Administrative Assistant, Administrative Support. Karen became familiar with SED Systems while completing her work experience practicum with the company as part of the SIAST Kelsey Institute program (now known as Saskatchewan Polytechnic) that she was enrolled in. Karen was hired as a secretary shortly after she graduated from the college in June 1987.

“I did my work experience here and got hired when I was finished business college,” says Karen. “When I started, I was a secretary in the marketing department and then I joined the secretarial pool before ending up where I am today.”

Over the past almost three decades, Karen has witnessed changes within the company and with technology. “There have been many changes over the years, but the ones that stand out are the fact that we now call our superiors by their first name—that was hard to get used to. Also, witnessing how much technology has changed,” she adds.

When asked about her proudest moment at work, Karen had this to say: “I can’t quite put a finger on my proudest moment; I guess just making it this far gives me pride enough. I really enjoy the people here and I’ve had an amazing boss which makes all the difference!”

“Karen was the first person to greet me on my first day with Calian and she started my career by training me at the front desk,” says Amanda Luther, Administrative Manager, Engineering Services. “I am grateful for her welcoming smile that calmed my nerves as she showed me the ropes. She has been a great support to me and always provided an ear to listen. I will greatly miss her and the guidance she has given me."

“Karen has done so much for me over the years,” says Danielle Korol, Senior HR Assistant. “I could always count on her to know the answer to any question I asked and to help me out with anything I needed. No ask was ever too big, she would always respond with ‘no problem.’ It’s been a great pleasure getting to know her and working with her.”

“Karen has been a warm and welcoming co-worker, and she was always willing to help out whenever she was asked,” says Debbie Werezak, Marketing Specialist. “Karen was very dedicated to her job, and she was often the first person I would see at work each morning. I wish her all the best in her well-deserved retirement."

Deciding to retire was an easy decision for Karen, she has her sights on completing several projects, travel, family and more.

“It was not difficult to decide to retire. I’ve been working since I was 15 and I think I’ve put in enough time!” said Karen. “I’m sure I’ll spend the first couple of weeks just enjoying not having to get up and spending time relaxing. I have many projects that I would like to work on, and I also want to travel to visit family and friends as much as possible.”
