In August 2023, a series of devastating wildfires raged across the Hawaiian Island of Maui. Approximately 115 people were killed, and nearly 3,000 structures damaged or destroyed by fire. The wildfires go down as among the world’s deadliest on record.
This event hit close to home for Calian’s recent acquisition, Hawaii Pacific Teleport (HPT), who saw the destruction firsthand in their communities. HPT was quick to act, helping restore vital communications efforts to affected areas.
Disaster Response Efforts
Closely following the breakout of the wildfires, HPT was in contact with Hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency (HI-EMA), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Maui Police Department to assist in restoring emergency communications in the aftermath of the wildfires. HPT donated time and service to install antenna resources, restoring critical communications links and Internet access.
“Our priority is assisting the groups doing vital work to assist our community during this difficult time,” said Leeana Smith-Ryland, CEO of HPT. “It is inspiring to see the community come together in the wake of such an event, and HPT is dedicated to supporting these efforts wherever we can.”
HPT sent engineers to install antenna components on the roof of a local hotel where the Family Assistance Center and the State Unemployment Insurance team were working to support affected Maui residents and, more specifically, the historic resort town of Lāhainā, which was struck hardest by the wildfires. As of August 19, 2023, communications were up and running to support these important community initiatives.
Calian and HPT also provided a US $20,000 donation to the Maui Strong Fund to further assist with the quick deployment of proper resources to provide rapid response and recovery efforts for those affected by this tragedy.

Beyond external stigma based on long-standing societal misconceptions around mental health, there’s an internal story we tell ourselves. It’s a story where we minimize the feelings we’re having, or even shame ourselves for feeling them in the first place.
