December 2, 2015, Ottawa, Ontario – Calian is pleased to announce that its Systems Engineering Division (SED) has a new contract from Cobham SATCOM for the provision of Satellite Ground Systems. SED was chosen by Cobham SATCOM for the provision and installation of an RF Ground System as part of the European Aviation Network (EAN) launched by Inmarsat (LSE:ISAT.L), the leading provider of global mobile satellite communications services. The contract will start immediately and installation and commissioning of the RF system is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2016.

SED’s Satellite Ground Systems delivery will support Cobham SATCOM’s contract with Inmarsat, which covers design and production of an advanced Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) terminal for the EAN, in addition to responsibility for updating the Inmarsat BGAN ground infrastructure to accommodate S-band operation.

“This is an exciting win for us,” said Patrick Thera, President of Calian’s SED division, “We have an excellent world-wide reputation for our high quality satellite ground systems. This win further demonstrates our expertise in providing solutions for the complex requirements of higher frequency bands such as Ka-band which are used in high throughput satellite applications.”

The EAN, which was unveiled in September, is the first aviation passenger connectivity solution in Europe to combine an advanced satellite network, operated by Inmarsat, and LTE-based ground network, operated by Deutsche Telekom. As a result, commercial and business airlines will be able to offer reliable, high-speed internet access to passengers during flights across the continent’s high-traffic flight paths, utilising Inmarsat’s 30MHz (2 x 15MHz) S-band spectrum allocation in all 28 EU member states.

“Cobham SATCOM is pleased to have Calian onboard,” said Casper Jensen, VP Business Development, Cobham SATCOM. “Their work will support our delivery to Inmarsat, which will help to improve aviation passenger connectivity in Europe, through establishment of the EAN.”
