Vancouver, B.C. April 24, 2017 – On Tuesday, April 25, 2017, healthcare professionals, policy makers, and government officials will gather in downtown Vancouver, B.C. for an engaging breakfast seminar entitled "Behind the Wall: Unique Challenges of Correctional Healthcare Workers."

Presentations by our three experts will explore addictions and the opioid crisis, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and some resiliency lessons learned from the military, as well as the various healthcare delivery models being employed in correctional facilities across Canada.

“Working as a healthcare provider in a correctional facility can be uniquely stressful,” said Scott Murray, Vice President Health Services at Calian. “Our aim by hosting this panel is to provide a forum for sharing our speakers' insights and expertise as well as initiating dialogue around how to better support correctional healthcare professionals by exploring both current delivery models and some lessons learned from the defence community and our other healthcare partners.”

Speakers include Dr. Bruce Monkhouse, Forensic Psychologist, who will speak to the challenges placed upon the B.C. correctional system by the opioid crisis; Dr. Rakesh Jetly, Meakin’s Chair of Military Mental Health at the Institute of Mental Health Research, who will share lessons learned from the military in the management of PTSD and resiliency training; and Dr. Nick Withers, Calian Medical Director at the Surrey Jail, who will offer a review and analysis of various healthcare delivery models available to the Canadian corrections industry through the lens of his experience with the Canadian military and the Surrey Jail.
