TORONTO, ON, Jan. 20, 2016 — Today, the Calian Technologies Ltd. (TSX: CTY) Health team, in collaboration with Military Family Services, announced the national launch of its Military Family Doctor Network, aimed at improving access to family physicians for families of serving Canadian Armed Forces members.

“The families that support our Canadian Armed Forces members experience many unique challenges as a result of their service. We are happy to do our part to help address the healthcare needs of military families through improved access to family physicians within our network,” said Scott Murray, VP Health Services at Calian.

The Military Family Doctor Network will help match physicians practicing at Calian’s Primacy Clinics in Loblaw grocery store locations (including Real Canadian Superstore®, Zehrs®, Loblaws® and No Frills®) with military families in need of a family physician. The network will leverage the more than 400 family physicians practicing at over 140 Primacy clinics across Canada.

“The Military Family Doctor Network is a great option for military families in need of a family physician. Through the creation of this Network, Calian has not only demonstrated good corporate citizenship, but has also taken tangible action to help military families receive timely access to quality healthcare services in their community,” said LGen Christine Whitecross, Commander of Military Personnel Command.

The Military Family Doctor Network addresses an urgent and growing need for military families. According to the 2013 National Defence and Canadian Armed Forces Ombudsman’s report On the Homefront: Assessing the Well-being of Canada’s Military Families in the New Millennium, military families experience a high degree of difficulty accessing and maintaining a family physician, due in part to their frequent relocations, and were four times less likely to have a family physician when compared to civilian families.

Local Military Family Resource Centres have been involved in promoting the Network to military families and are also providing an access point to Calian and its network of family physicians.

“We’re really excited to be working with Calian to help military families connect with family physicians in our community,” said Lisa Berardo, Interim Executive Director, Toronto Military Family Resource Centre. “Accessing healthcare remains a top concern for military families as they relocate frequently from one location to another and this is a great community partnership that offers viable options for our families!”

The Military Family Doctor Network was first introduced in Winnipeg in July 2015 and has seen tremendous success, with more than 85 patients in 41 military families being referred to family physicians since the initial launch. Other regions including Toronto and Halifax were subsequently added to the Network and today the program is expanding to multiple communities across Canada, including Saskatchewan.

“We are proud to extend our support to the families of our military members,” said Kevin Ford, President and CEO of Calian. “This program is a logical extension of Calian’s long-standing relationship with the Department of National Defence, who Calian has been supporting for over 25 years.”
