HALIFAX, NS, Dec. 9, 2015 — Today, Calian Technologies Ltd. (TSX: CTY) Health team, in collaboration with the Halifax & Region Military Family Resource Centre, launched its Military Family Doctor Network in Halifax, aimed at improving access for families of serving Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members to family physicians.

The Military Family Doctor Network will help match physicians, practicing at Calian's Primacy Clinics in Loblaw locations in the Halifax area, with military families in need of a family physician. Four clinics and seven physicians have agreed to participate in the Halifax program to date.

“The families supporting our Canadian Armed Forces serving members experience many unique challenges. We are happy to do our part to help alleviate some of that burden through improved access to family physicians within our network,” said Scott Murray, VP Health Services at Calian.

The Calian Military Family Doctor Network addresses an urgent and growing need for military families. According to the 2013 National Defence and Canadian Armed Forces Ombudsman’s report On the Homefront: Assessing the Well-being of Canada’s Military Families in the New Millennium, military families experience a high degree of difficulty accessing and maintaining a family physician, due in part to their frequent relocations, and were four times less likely to have a family physician when compared to civilian families.

"One of the toughest challenges that military families face is frequent relocation. As Halifax is home to one of the largest military bases in Canada, we are very pleased that the Halifax & Region MFRC has been chosen as a pilot site for the Calian Military Family Doctor Network. This program will enable us to provide greater support to our large military community,” said Colleen Calvert, Executive Director, Halifax & Region Military Family Resource Centre.

The Military Family Doctor Network originally launched in Winnipeg in July and has seen tremendous success, with more than 60 patients being referred to family physicians in the initial four months of the program.

The network will continue to expand nationally in 2016, leveraging the more than 140 Primacy clinics across Canada representing a network of over 400 family physicians.

"We are proud to extend our support to the families of our military members,” said Kevin Ford, President and CEO of Calian. "This program is a logical extension of Calian's long-standing relationship with the Department of National Defence who Calian has been supporting for over 25 years."
