What is the Net Zero Challenge?

In February 2023, Calian enrolled in Canada’s Net Zero Challenge (NZC). The NZC is designed for both public and private sectors to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Led by the Government of Canada, the NZC encourages organizations across all industries to take steps towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and addressing climate related issues. The Government of Canada has committed to reducing Canada’s emissions by 40-45% from 2005 levels by 2030, putting Canada on a path to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

How is Calian meeting the NZC requirements?

To join the NZC, Calian committed to set a net-zero emissions target for 2050 for Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, while working toward a more sustainable future.

Within 12 months of joining NZC, the participants must complete the NZC Preliminary Participation Checklist. To meet the checklist requirements, we worked with a third-party vendor to complete a Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosure (TCFD) gap analysis and develop a preliminary net-zero TCFD roadmap. TCFD is a key element of the international reporting standards that are expected to be adopted by most countries, including Canada, over the next few years.

We published our first TCFD report available here.

The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change commented: “More and more businesses across Canada are aiming to make their facilities and operations net-zero—not just to fight climate change, but also to stimulate innovation, demonstrate corporate responsibility, and ensure their long-term competitiveness. By taking up the Net-Zero Challenge, alongside more than 130 other companies, Calian is spearheading Canada’s clean industrial advantage and the path toward a sustainable future.”

Within 24 months, participants must complete the NZC Comprehensive Participation Checklist. To meet the checklist requirements, Calian worked with a third-party vendor to complete climate scenario analysis and established targets aligned to the NZC bronze criteria using FY2023 as the base year:

For Scope 1 and 2 (absolute targets):

For Scope 3 (absolute targets):

What are Calian’s next steps?

The corporate ESG team and business segment ESG committees are developing action plans to address the most material climate related risks and opportunities including specific absolute emissions reduction targets aligned to the Net Zero Challenge.
