Horizon Family Medicine is a new, dynamic family medical practice located in two central Alberta locations, Red Deer and Sylvan Lake. With the Red Deer population nearing 100,000 and Sylvan Lake rapidly increasing to nearly 15,000, this area is known for being a hub in Alberta for tourism, strong family values and robust economic growth. Specifically, Sylvan Lake, Alberta’s summer playground and most popular lake has become a popular place for families and those seeking seasonal recreational activity options. The area is also conveniently centrally located within a 1 hour drive of the international airports of Edmonton and Calgary and 2 hours from the majestic Rocky Mountains of Banff.
Horizon Family Medicine, having opened in April 2011, currently has a well-balanced team of 15 family physicians on staff with a strong blend of experienced mid and early career doctors who enjoy working together in a “paperless environment”. To accomplish this, Horizon has implemented a fully integrated electronic medical record software system, Med Access. The EMR includes electronic lab results, on-line access to local digital medical imaging results as well as access to Alberta Netcare, the provincial health record.
With a combined 25 spacious exam rooms (including 2 procedure rooms) in the two locations furnished with brand new medical equipment, Horizon Family Medicine is looking to continue to recruit additional physicians for our clinic who identify with our vision.
Lifestyle and family/medical career balance are core elements of the foundation for the operation of the clinic. Horizon has physicians providing the full spectrum of care, including participation in low-risk obstetrics groups, hospital patient coverage, long term care as well as RDRH hospitalist. However, our lifestyle prioritization also means that we have physicians who choose to work only during clinic hours, and several physicians who work part-time in order to achieve their desired work/life balance. We leave that choice with you without any pressure or financial penalties for restricted or part-time practice. The clinic also provides practice coverage with no associated overhead costs during vacations, maternity leaves or other periods of absence.
Each physician also fully directs their practice style and pace of their booked or walk-in appointments. Physician scheduling is balanced with each full-time physician’s schedule not exceeding one evening shift per week in walk-in (finished by 8 pm) and one Saturday shift every 12 or so weeks. This provides opportunity for physicians to have greater freedom and balance in their medical practices as well as providing options to pursue areas of special interest.
As an example, a number of Horizon Family Medicine physicians have taken the opportunity to engage in international medical humanitarian work, and we are fully supportive of such initiatives. In February 2014, a four family physician team from Horizon travelled to Haiti for one week to help in the medical efforts, including basic health care and disease prevention, currently provided through a local medical clinic.
In summary, Horizon Family Medicine believes that a balanced lifestyle is of paramount importance and we are committed to ensuring that each physician is empowered to build his or her practice profile to precisely match their personal vision of an optimal balance.
On the patient side, Horizon Family Medicine strongly focuses on overall patient health and providing an excellent clinical patient experience and top quality healthcare services. The clinic is also part of the Red Deer Primary Care Network with primary care professionals such as family, maternity and mental health nurses, as well as pharmacists rotating onsite to assist patients with their specific care needs. In 2017, Horizon provided high quality medical services for over 80,000 patient visits.
The clinic is professionally managed and is an excellent income opportunity for family physicians with one of the lowest clinic overhead rates for a group practice in Central Alberta. We have negotiated exceptional terms for our locations and pass the financial benefits onto our physicians in the form of higher remuneration. External billings, such as hospital revenue, are also not part of the overhead expense allowing physicians unparalleled overall financial returns compared to other clinics in Central Alberta. Our attractive splits reflect our long-term commitment to our physicians, and we do not require future financial investment buying into the practice or offer "teaser rates".
In December 2012, Horizon Family Medicine was recognized by Alberta Netcare for being an “e-health champion” and in April and June 2013, the clinic was profiled in the Globe and Mail newspaper and The Medical Post for its very successful clinical and business operations utilizing an EMR. Recently in 2017, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, as part of the Provincial Group Practice Review, rated Horizon’s practice as “outstanding” and gave the clinic a perfect score on its standards of practice. In addition in 2017, Horizon Family Medicine was voted Red Deer’s “Favorite Medical Clinic” through an online poll conducted by the Red Deer Advocate newspaper.
