CALIAN ANNOUNCES PROMOTION OF SHAUN MCEWAN TO ROLE OF PRESIDENT AND CEO

Kanata, May 9th, 2000 : Larry O'Brien, Chairman of Calian (TSE: CTY) is pleased to announce the promotion of Shaun McEwan to President and CEO of Calian, effective immediately.

Mr. McEwan joined Calian in 1996 as Director of Corporate Finance and was promoted to the position of Chief Financial Officer in June of 1997. In this position Shaun had responsibility for both financial performance and corporate strategy. Shaun has been a leading member of the Senior Executive through the company's transformation over the last four years as it moved from $49 million to over $100 million in revenues with an increase in return on investment from 8% to 22% in the last two years.

Shaun's major initiatives have been on the development and implementation of Economic Value Added as the primary driver of financial decision making and the architect of Calian strategic business direction and operational business lines as champion of corporate acquisitions.

"Shaun, in his previous role as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, played an integral part in the transformation of Calian to a services company focused on significant growth opportunities in the Business-to-Employee (B2E) sector," said Mr. O'Brien. "I am confident that his strong vision of Calian's future will be fundamentally important to the Company as it enters the next phase of its corporate development."

Under Mr. McEwan's direction, Calian's management team will continue to focus on its emerging B2E business. By the end of 2001, this business is expected to represent at least one-third of Calian's total revenue. In 1999, e-business represented approximately 14% of the Company's revenues.

Larry O'Brien will continue in his role as Chairman of Calian. His move is consistent with his commitment to see Calian through its transformation. "I believe strongly that Calian has never been in a better position to build value for its shareholders. Shaun and his management team, because of its intimate involvement in our progress during the last three years, is the natural choice to lead." O'Brien will continue to make a significant strategic contribution from his position on the Board.
